​8 Different kinds of intelligence

How smart are you? what are the different kinds of intelligence? You may answer this question depends on your grades in school or the results of an IQ test. But are there any fair basis to assess a person’s mental capabilities?

According to Harvard’s Howard Gardner, intelligence actually comes in eight factors. In a recent video for Big Think, the developmental psychologist pointed not only two kinds of intelligence that IQ tests capture (language and logical) nut also outlined another six types of intelligence these IQ tests fail to measure. What are the different kinds of intelligence?

1. Musical intelligence

Gardner said that people did not assume music talent is an intelligence. But it does not make sense if you are good at words and it’s a kind of intelligence but if you are good at tones and rhythm and timbres, it’s not. And nobody gave him a good answer which is why it makes sense to talk about musical intelligence.

2. Spatial intelligence

This is the grasp of how things lay in space that that allows a surgeon to perform near miracles or a chess master to win. As Gardner said, it was also what an airplane pilot or a sea captain would have. How did you find your way around large territory and large space?

3. Bodily kinesthetic intelligence

This kind of intelligence also cannot be measured by IQ tests. There are two types of bodily kinesthetic intelligence. The first one is the ability to use your whole body to make things or solve problems such as athletes and dancers. The second one is being able to use your hands and other parts of your body to make things or solve problems like a craftsperson.

4. Interpersonal intelligence

This concept is similar to the popular definition of EQ. Interpersonal intelligence is the way you understand other people, the way you motivate them, the way you lead them, the way you work with them and the way you cooperate with them. According to Gardner, this type of intelligence is very important for leaders.

5. Intrapersonal intelligence

Intrapersonal intelligence, or self-knowledge is important but very hard to assess, especially in today’s fast-changing world. Gardner explains: “Nowadays, in developed society, people lead their own lives. We follow our own careers. We often switch careers. We don’t necessarily live at home as we get older. And if you don’t have a good understanding of yourself, you are in big trouble.

6. Naturalist intelligence

IQ test cannot measure naturalist intelligence as well. This is the capacity to make important discriminations in the worlds of nature between one plant and the others, between on animal and the others.
